Forum: GratefulDead Subject: 2013 Festy Lineup Announced (Attention Jim Glynn)

http://thefesty.com/artist_type_2013/2013-festy-lineup/

Initial Festy Experience lineup announced yesterday. Here's the initial lineup with more to come....

Infamous Stringdusters (3 sets rumored)
J J Grey and MOFRO
John Scofield Uberjam Band
Chris Thile and Michael Daves
Della Mae
Aoife O'Donovan
Marco Benevento
Lake Street Dive
Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers
Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad
David Wax Museum
Nathan Moore & Bryan Elijah Smith

First tier Thursday-Monday camping tickets ($99) sold out in 14 minutes.

Second tier still available at $124. On site car pass is another $20, Thursday Early Entry Pass is another $20 if you want to show up on Thursday. "Official" festival starts Friday around noon. The after show bonfire jams each night are magical - although sitting next to Andy Hall in a picking circle can get intimidating when he throws you a break. I just smiled and kept playing rhythm.

So if you want to see great music in the Shenandoahs in the fall, around $170 gets you in on Thursday, music Friday-Sunday, overnight camping and loadout/departure on Monday (Columbus Day).

Not a bad way to spend a long weekend.

So, who else is in? If it entices anyone, I always bring several bottles of good scotch, a couple of quarts of apple pie moonshine (courtesy of the Patrick County DA, purchased at FloydFest) and 20 pounds of ghost pepper beef jerky. Hippies loved the jerky last year and we bartered. 6-8 strips of jerky for a beer ticket. We had 15 pounds last year with about 100 strips per pound. You do the math....

Experienced camping helps, last year it was 85 on Thursday and Friday, Saturday dropped into the mid 70s, Saturday night into Sunday morning a front came through bringing rain/snow mix and Sunday highs of 34. Not too many casual campers prepare (well) for a 50 degree temperature swing.

You said that about FloydFest.

Seriously though, Besides the Dusters, Della Mae, Marco Benevento, Aoife O'Donovan and JJ Grey made it for me.

I've seen Chris Thile and Michael Daves before and it almost makes me want to throw away my mandolin and guitar.

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad gets points just for their name. But every festival needs at least one Reggae punk dub step band don't they?

Mando,

If you are also planning on going to Further, NY & Crazy Horse, Panic. Etc. down here in Sept., be sure to allow yourself some HOURS of extra time to get to the show. There is some bad construction on 29 near it, and I have no idea how they can possibly handle the number of people that will show up.

Haven't decided on Interlocken yet. My gut tells me the organizers may have bitten off more than they can chew. It seems like it's too big right out of the gate and the logistics will be a nightmare - both getting there and the on-site camping. And there's always the issue of what type of crowd is there. I'd be leery of leaving anything of value at my campsite with an inaugural festival. A couple fo years ago at Floyd, I had left my guitar and mandolin in my camp chair while I went to lunch. When I came back they were gone and I started to blow a gasket. then I saw the note pinned to my chair saying "It looked like it might rain so I put your guitar and mandolin in the big olive and tan Kelty tent" complete with an arrow pointing at my tent. My faith in the basic goodness of humanity was restored.

At least the weather should be somewhat cooled off by September, but tent camping in an open field can be hotter than a three balled tomcat in the sun.

The VIP ticket isn't a bad price at all given the bands that are on the schedule. May have to give this one some more thought. In addition to Furthur and NY, I dig the String Cheese Incident and Panic so I'd get my money's worth I'm sure.

I'd work my way up 26 and backroads from Appomattox but the closer you got, everything would gridlock.

Have you given any thought to Festy? If you've been to a music fest before, you know how hard it is to adequately describe everything that goes on besides "just" the music. Both FloydFest and Festy are so much more than the music, but it's hard to convey that to someone unless they've been to one.

I'll stop rambling now.....

I have been to DB a bunch but not to the Festy. Chris Thile is a favorite of mine.

Interschlock is backed, if surreptitiously, by a very experienced promoter, which I can not understand since the logistics have a shot at being horrendous. He will not care b/c a chopper would take him in if he wanted. There are other details involving the guy that explain the reason for the event.

If you decide to go, I live about 15 minutes from it, and you are welcome to crash or camp at my place. Same goes for Festy if you need a place to bail due to bad weather etc. I am in a 100% defensible and isolated post LOL. I also have a way to get into the venue that may be helpful. I might try to work backstage just to avoid a lot of the crowd.

Tuna Sunday and DSO in August. Unusually musical summer.

Got it, you can purge the # from the post if you want. I'll give you a call after work just so you can capture my number - NSA could always give it to you.

Thanks for the offer to crash for Interlocken. That just sweetened the pot.

Cool.

I would not expect the crowd to be anything but great inasmuch as it stays relatively local, which seems doubtful. That said, people get cranky when they have to sit in unorganized traffic mess. Stay in touch. I have not really inquired as to the deal with this event just had some info from before it was announced and was expecting something different.

They have had my # for at least 25 years since they started filming all the license plates going into Hampton from the balcony of the Red Roof. As the Redneck Buddha says, "It's amazing what you can get away with when you are not breaking any laws."

Will discuss with my better half. I may be able to talk her into a nice camping road trip!
